Our legal assistance has been, is and always will be completely free. The running costs of the association, salaries for our team and the costs of projects are financed from grant funds, 1% donations and donations from people supporting us. Over the past years we have been struggling with enormous difficulties in ensuring the continuity of financing, which is why donations from private individuals are very important to us - even the smallest ones, but not only one-off payments, also regular ones.
The Halina Nieć Legal Aid Center is a non-profit non-governmental organisation established in 2002 in Cracow. HNLAC’s main objective is to protect human rights by providing free legal aid to asylum seekers and refugees in Poland, especially those in detention.
During 20 years of experience, we have provided free legal assistance to over 16,500 persons. Most of them were people applying for granting international protection staying in open or guarded centers for foreigners. However, this legal assistance was and is provided not only at the HNLAC's office in Krakow or by means of remote communication, but also in centers where the HNLAC's lawyers carry out numerous missions. In addition, they also visit border crossings, and now also Border Guard posts on the Polish-Belarusian border, where people detained after crossing the border are staying. Until now, for many years, these missions were carried out with the use of a private car lent to the office by one of the employees of the HNLAC. However, due to the recent numerous missions as well as wear and tear of the car, it requires a major engine overhaul, and the HNLAC had to rent a car in order to be able to carry out further missions this year. In the long run, however, this option is costly and less profitable than buying a used car that would become the property of the HNLAC and can be freely used in future missions.
